Should Kids Be Telling Their Stories Online?

We have lots of college students telling their story as they explore agriculture and all, but how many of us have little kids telling their story? Not many. And for good reason. Lots of us want to encourage kids to be kids.

Spending weekend hours writing blog posts for the week just doesn’t sound like the way a kindergartner should be spending time. A much better outlet is playing soccer, doing art projects, helping plant a garden or something else that involves fun!

Those other things that weekends and afternoons are spent doing, those are a lot of the things that “mommy bloggers” share on a regular basis. I love seeing what their family is up to! And while I’m no mom, I love being an aunt. And I’m finding some of the kids in my life may just have an eye for photography and video. In fact, my friend’s daughter Miss A helped me capture a recent soccer game. And her perspective was a bit different from mine. Its something incredible to see!

I love watching the excitement of learning and love her getting the experience of shooting it. I love showing kids how my various cameras work — they really love the big ones with detachable lenses and I’m amazed with how careful they will be when trusted. But as far as giving them venues to tell their stories online? For now, I think I’ll be happy coaching from the sidelines and seeing what they capture. And at times, selectively, I will share those stories like the soccer game Miss A captured on my FlipCam!

I’m thinking that when the time comes for her to step up and tell her family farm’s story, she’ll have some of the basic tools. No need to rush her now though, its her turn to run the field and score a goal!
